Applying Essential Oil

Thoughtfully chosen for quality, performance and atmosphere.

Our Scent Philosophy

Guided by science. Defined by fragrance.

At Candlemaid, we believe creating an exceptional candle involves far more than choosing a beautiful scent. It requires an understanding of ingredients, fragrance chemistry, wax performance, combustion and how a candle behaves throughout its life.

Our approach has been shaped by years of research, experimentation and extensive testing. We believe in looking beyond marketing terminology and making informed decisions based on evidence, performance and safety. Every ingredient has a purpose. Every formulation has a reason behind it.

Born From Research, Not Marketing

When Candlemaid first began, we explored creating candles exclusively with essential oils. Like many people, we were initially attracted to the idea of using ingredients extracted directly from plants. But rather than accepting that natural must automatically mean better, we wanted to understand how these ingredients actually performed.

We spent years researching, blending, pouring and testing. Importantly, we also retained our early prototypes, allowing us to observe changes over time. Some of those original candles remain in our testing archive today.

What we discovered influenced our approach considerably. Fragrances that had originally been fresh and appealing changed during storage. Some lost their distinctive notes, while others developed an unpleasant, sour character.

Changes in fragrance can have several causes, including oxidation and the degradation of aromatic compounds. Although these observations don't mean all essential oils behave in the same way, they raised important questions about fragrance stability and longevity.

We wanted more than a candle that smelled beautiful when freshly poured. We wanted to develop fragrances that would retain their intended character over a reasonable period of storage. That experience led us towards carefully formulated fragrance oils.

Natural Does Not Automatically Mean Safer

There is a widespread assumption that essential oils are inherently purer, healthier or safer because they come from plants.

Scientifically, that simply isn't true.

Essential oils are highly concentrated mixtures of naturally occurring chemical compounds. Some contain recognised allergens, skin irritants or substances subject to restrictions under chemical safety regulations. Their natural origin does not make them harmless.

Equally, fragrance ingredients manufactured through controlled chemical processes are not automatically harmful. Safety depends on the properties of the individual substances, their concentrations, how they are used and the level of exposure. Both essential oils and fragrance oils require responsible formulation and appropriate safety assessment.

Natural does not mean non-toxic. Plant-derived does not mean allergen-free. And a reassuring ingredient description is not a substitute for evidence.

Why We Choose Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils allow perfumers to combine carefully selected aromatic ingredients to create complex, balanced and consistent scent profiles. They may contain both naturally derived and manufactured fragrance components.

For Candlemaid, this offers greater flexibility in developing the fragrances we want to create, from fresh coastal notes to deeper, more atmospheric compositions. Some essential oils perform successfully in candles. Others can change character, lose particular notes or provide disappointing fragrance performance when heated.

Fragrance oils are not automatically superior or safer in every situation, but selecting formulations intended for candle making allows us to consider performance, compatibility and consistency from the outset.

Our decision is not about rejecting nature. It is about choosing ingredients suited to the product we are making.

Our Coconut Wax

The foundation of our candles is coconut-based wax, selected after extensive experimentation with different waxes and formulations.

We chose it for its appearance, texture and the fragrance performance we have achieved through our own testing. But wax alone does not determine the quality or safety of a candle.

How it interacts with the fragrance, wick and vessel is equally important. That's why we treat every finished candle as a complete formulation rather than judging individual ingredients in isolation.

The Science Behind the Flame

A burning candle is a carefully balanced system.

Heat from the flame melts the surrounding wax, releasing fragrance molecules into the air. The wick draws liquid wax upwards, where fuel is vaporised and combustion takes place. The type of wax, fragrance concentration, wick construction and vessel dimensions all influence how a candle performs.

These factors can affect flame height, soot formation, melt-pool development and vessel temperature. A candle made from natural ingredients is not automatically cleaner-burning or safer than one containing manufactured fragrance components.

What matters is the finished formulation and how it behaves under real burning conditions. At Candlemaid, we carry out repeated burn testing, observing flame behaviour, wax consumption, melt-pool development and vessel temperatures as our candles progress through their burn life.

We also assess fragrance performance, both before lighting and during use. A candle isn't ready simply because it looks beautiful and smells wonderful.

It must perform as intended.

Safety, Standards & Transparency

Our approach to safety begins with understanding the materials we use.

We review relevant supplier documentation, including safety data sheets, fragrance allergen information and IFRA conformity documentation where applicable.

IFRA standards establish restrictions and conditions for the use of particular fragrance ingredients. They are an important part of responsible fragrance formulation, although they do not replace finished-candle testing or other applicable regulatory requirements. We also consider UK chemical classification and labelling requirements when preparing our products.

We don't believe any ingredient should be described as completely harmless simply because of its origin. Nor do we believe that terms such as natural, pure or clean can replace meaningful information about formulation and safety.

Transparency means explaining what we use, why we use it and the work involved in developing our candles.

Fragrance That Lasts

Longevity is an important part of our approach to quality. Our earliest experiments taught us that the way a fragrance smells when freshly poured is not necessarily how it will smell after months of storage.

Fragrance ingredients can change over time, and factors such as temperature, light, oxygen exposure and formulation can influence their stability.

No fragranced candle can be guaranteed to remain unchanged indefinitely. Nevertheless, we believe that thoughtful ingredient selection, appropriate storage and continued observation are important parts of developing a premium product.

Our aim is to create candles that offer a beautiful, consistent fragrance experience, from the moment they are first opened through their intended period of use.

A Considered Approach

We have nothing against essential oils. They have many valuable applications, and they can be used successfully in well-formulated candles. But we do not accept that a candle is inherently better, healthier or safer simply because its fragrance comes directly from plants.

We believe the same scrutiny should apply to every ingredient, regardless of its origin. Our decisions are shaped by research, practical experience and a commitment to improving our products through testing. We choose our materials for what they contribute to the finished candle, not because of the marketing language attached to them.

Because a beautiful candle deserves more than a beautiful story. It deserves thoughtful formulation, careful testing and an understanding of the science behind it.
